Free Youth Basketball Clinic this Saturday in New Bedford

On Saturday November 8th, Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter’s office will conduct a free basketball clinic for Fall River youth. The clinic marks the 70th free youth sports clinic offered by District Attorney Sutter since the program’s launch in 2007. To date, more than 4,600 total youth have been served.

Saturday’s free basketball clinic is a collaboration between the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, the New Bedford Public Schools and the New Bedford High School Basketball Teams. Bonzie Colson, Head Coach at New Bedford High School, will facilitate the clinic, assisted by players of the school’s basketball teams. In addition, members of the District Attorney’s office will serve as mentors to youth in attendance.

The program itself is managed by former Boston Red Sox pitcher, Brian Rose. Rose works for the District Attorney’s Office in its Community Affairs Division acting as Volunteer Coordinator, Free Youth Sports Clinic Director, and Neighborhood Liaison.

Saturday’s one-day clinic will take place from 10:00am – 12:00pm at New Bedford High School, located at 230 Hathaway Boulevard in New Bedford. Participation is open to both boys and girls in grades 2-8. All levels welcome.

Since 2007, District Attorney Sutter has offered free sports clinics for youth interested in basketball, baseball, tennis, and lacrosse. The recurring program was launched as part of District Attorney Sutter’s unique ‘Volunteer Initiative,’ aiming to engage the community in a spirit of volunteerism and activities for pro-active crime prevention. As a result, the free sports clinics promote a healthy and active lifestyle, while providing youth with an outlet to stay involved and avoid risk factors for criminal activity. Staff from the District Attorney’s office volunteer at the sports clinics, in addition to numerous other community programs, resulting in more than 20,000 community service hours since 2007.
