New Bedford Man Convicted of St. Patrick’s Day 2012 New Bedford Murder
Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter announced that Jose Carrion, 28, has been convicted of second degree murder in connection to the March 17, 2012 stabbing death of 33-year-old Melvin Pina in New Bedford.
A jury of his peers announced the conviction around 3 p.m. today in the Fall River Justice Center. The trial lasted seven days and the jury deliberated for about three full days before returning its verdict this afternoon. Superior Court Judge Rene Dupuis has scheduled sentencing for Monday morning at 9 a.m.
Mr. Carrion, of New Bedford, stood accused of stabbing Mr. Pina five times after the two men encountered each other at an underground dance club on Conduit Street in New Bedford during the overnight hours of March 17, 2012. Mr. Pina’s body was discovered in the backyard of a home on Bates Street shortly after day break on March 17th.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Katie Rayburn and Michael Cahillane.
