New Bedford Man Convicted of 2009 Murder and Non-Fatal Shooting
District Attorney Sam Sutter announced that a jury of his peers today convicted 22-year-old Erick Cournoyer of second degree murder and other charges connected to the July 1st shooting death of 18-year-old Bianca Rosado in New Bedford.
The jury deliberated for about seven hours over the course of two days before returning its verdict earlier today. Mr. Cournoyer was also convicted of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for the non-fatal shooting of Rosado’s boyfriend, Victor Camacho, along with two counts of possessing an illegal firearm and one count of illegal possession of ammunition.
Superior Court Judge Renee Dupuis sentenced Mr. Cournoyer to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Patrick O. Bomberg.
“As always, my first thoughts are with Ms. Rosado’s and Mr. Camacho’s families. Ms. Rosado was gunned down senselessly and brutally just as she was starting her adult life. I am grateful to the jury and the prosecution team that we were able to deliver both families some measure of justice. I also would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Assistant District Attorney Patrick Bomberg for his leadership on this case and his stellar advocacy in court. Our victim witness advocate, Brandon Ferris, and all of the state police and New Bedford Police detectives involved in this case deserve high praise,” District Attorney Sutter said.
“Standing next to the sheer human tragedy of this event is an object lesson about teenagers getting a hold of illegal guns. Here was an individual barely 17 years old who was able to go into his home, grab an illegal gun and then come outside to kill one person and wound another. We have to do much more to stop teenagers from getting illegal guns, because they are dangerous when they do.”
