Co-First Assistant District Attorney Patrick O. Bomberg was named the William O’Malley Prosecutor of the Year on Thursday, May 17th at the Massachusetts District Attorney’s Association conference in Boston. The award was presented to Bomberg by Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III.
Bomberg has served as a prosecutor since 1995 in both the Bristol and Plymouth District Attorney’s offices. He served in the Plymouth County District Court for approximately six years, and then was promoted to Superior Court where he prosecuted serious felonies, including child abuse cases, until 2004.
In 2007 he joined the Bristol County District Attorney’s office. Shortly after District Attorney Quinn was appointed in January 2015, Bomberg was named First Assistant District Attorney. At that time, Bomberg, along with Deputy District Attorney William McCauley, was starting the high profile Aaron Hernandez murder trial. The case itself involved a year and a half of intensive investigation and trial preparation. The trial lasted three and a half months and resulted in a first degree murder coviction.
During the last decade, Bomberg has served in a number of critical positions in the office. In addition to management and trial responsibilities, he has served for a number of years as Chief Legal Counsel to the District Attorney. Bomberg’s duties also include supervising Asset Forfeiture and the Juvenile Court. Since 2015, he has been assigned to oversee the resolution of the Annie Dookhan and Sonya Farak cases.
Bomberg has successfully prosecuted a number of high profile cases. He won a conviction against two defendants, Anthony Perry and Kenneth Weiand, who were charged with the 2010 motor vehicle homicide in the death of Massachusetts State Trooper Douglas Weddleton.
He has successfully prosecuted several other homicide cases that include the New Bedford murder case of Eric Cournoyer and the Fall River first-degree murder conviction of Rene Gosselin, a brutal drug-related beating that resulted in death. He also successfully prosecuted several high-profile motor vehicle homicides. In one case Commonwealth v. Laudilino Camara, the defendant left the scene of the fatality and was later charged due to the investigative work overseen by Bomberg. In Commonwealth v. Andrews, the defendant was convicted of striking and killing a mentally handicapped person while in a cross-walk and left the scene.
He also supervised the successful prosecution of Michelle Carter this past summer, who was charged and convicted in Juvenile Court with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Conrad Roy, Jr. The case drew international interest and is on appeal.

I have come to rely on him for advice on a number of complex issues that come before the district attorney’s office,” District Attorney Quinn said. “He has been given many difficult assignments over the years that have always been handled with skill and professionalism. His work ethic, intellect and dedication would be difficult to match. Pat Bomberg is a most worthy recipient of the Prosecutor of the Year award.”
