A 41-year-old Taunton man involved in a November 2016 armed robbery at a Taunton retail store was sentenced to serve two to four years in state prison, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced.
Chad Cordeiro pleaded guilty in Fall River Superior Court to a single-count indictment, charging him with armed robbery.
On November 14, 2016 at 8:35pm, Taunton Police were dispatched to Family Dollar at 10 Cape Highway for a robbery. The victim stated the suspect entered the store, immediately came behind the counter and pushed something hard into his neck. The suspect then demanded that victim open the small safe on the floor behind the counter. The victim told the suspect that he was just a cashier and didn’t have access to the safe. The suspect then demanded the victim open his register. The victim opened the register and the suspect reached in and grabbed all the cash. The victim told police the suspect was wearing an off white or dirty sweatshirt, had a white bandana covering his face, and had something metal during the robbery but victim was unsure of what it was.
Police dispatch radioed that the suspect had fled on foot westbound toward the 99 Restaurant and was wearing a dirty white or off white sweatshirt. Raynham Police overheard the radio dispatch and responded to the area because the Family Dollar store is approximately 50 yards from the town line. Responding Raynham officers observed a male party walking on South Main Street, which runs right behind the Family Dollar store. The male was wearing a light colored shirt which appeared to be dingy, jeans, white sneakers, and a dark knit hat. Officers encountered the male, and immediately put him in handcuffs for safety reasons. During a pat-frisk for weapons, police located a butterfly style silver knife, a hypodermic syringe, a cell phone, a light gray/dirty white bandana, $424 cash, and the round portion of a metal spoon with only a small section of the handle still attached.
Raynham Police also found a white zip up sweatshirt on the front lawn of 30 S. Main St., approximately 20 feet from where the defendant was stopped. While being processed at the police station, the defendant stated he has a heroin problem and owes money to a couple of different courts.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Carolyn Morissette and the sentence was imposed by Judge Renee Dupuis.
“This is an example of a defendant with a drug habit who resorts to committing a violent robbery to support his addiction,” District Attorney Quinn said. “There must be consequences for this conduct.”
