Victim of Tuesday Night New Bedford Shooting Now Deceased

Justin Ortiz, the victim of a shooting Tuesday night in New Bedford, died from his injuries this afternoon around 4 p.m. at Rhode Island Hospital.

Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to this office, New Bedford Police and prosecutors are actively investigating the shooting, which is now officially a homicide.

At approximately 11:40 pm Tuesday night, New Bedford Police received a 911 call regarding a male suffering from a gunshot wound in an apartment building at 51 Tallman Street.  When rescue personnel arrived, they found the male victim in the hallway of the apartment building. The victim, later identified as 21-year-old Justin Ortiz, of New Bedford, was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital before being transported to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

The investigation is being coordinated by Assistant District Attorneys Dennis Collins and Matthew Friedel.

No further information on the facts of this ongoing investigation can be released at this time.
