Charges Filed In Connection to Ongoing Probe of Dartmouth Incident That Led to Non-Fatal Police Shooting

Bristol County District Attorney’s Office

Thomas M. Quinn III

District Attorney

Press Release

February 29, 2016

While the investigation into all the facts and circumstances surrounding the incidents that led to the police-involved non-fatal shooting of 23-year-old Ryan Kuphal in Dartmouth remains active and ongoing, preliminary criminal charges have now been filed in the case.

Mr. Kuphal has been charged at this time with domestic assault and battery, use of a motor vehicle without authority, larceny over $250, unarmed robbery of a person over 60 years old, and unarmed carjacking.

Mr. Kuphal remains in Rhode Island Hospital at this time, where he is being treated for a single gunshot wound. His condition is improving.

Since he is currently in Rhode Island, he must first be arraigned as a fugitive from justice in that state and waive rendition before being returned to Massachusetts for arraignment on the aforementioned charges. It is unclear at this time when that will occur.

When he is eventually returned to Massachusetts, he will be arraigned in New Bedford District Court.

The investigation into all facts and circumstances of the case is being coordinated by Assistant District Attorney Aaron Strojny, and is being conducted by Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office.

When more information becomes available regarding the defendant’s return to Massachusetts for arraignment, this office will send out a media advisory.

No further information can be disseminated at this time due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
