New Bedford Breaking and Entering Defendant Sentenced to 7-9 Year State Prison Term

District Attorney Tom Quinn today announced that a New Bedford man was sentenced to serve seven to nine years in state prison after being convicted of breaking into and robbing the Club Sport Madeira on Acushnet Avenue last March.

Harry Parson, 48, of 242 Austin Street, New Bedford, pleaded guilty Wednesday in fall River Superior Court to charges of breaking and entering to commit a felony and larceny from a building. Assistant District Attorney Jeanne Veanstra prosecuted the case on behalf of District Attorney Quinn. Mr. Parson was sentenced by Judge Raymond Veary to serve seven to nine years in state prison, to be followed by two years of supervised probation upon his release.

On March 12, 2014 at around 2:30 a.m., New Bedford Police were dispatched to Club Sport Madiera (1632 Acushnet Ave) on a report of a Breaking & Entering in progress with audible alarm. A neighbor heard the alarm, looked out his window and witnessed a bald male with a black and red jacket running from the club with what appeared to be a safe. At some point, the assailant tripped and fell, at which point he dropped the safe. He then entered a gold minivan with the safe and drove away with the van’s headlights turned off. After an alert was sent to all police in the area, a Massachusetts State Trooper spotted the minivan in the area and attempted to pull it over. The driver refused to pull over and led police on a short chase along narrow city streets. The defendant eventually stopped the van at 237 Austin Street, where he bailed out and began fleeing on foot. The defendant was tracked down by police shortly after leaving the van and was arrested.
