4th Annual Free Family Fitness and Fun Day

March 11, 2014

On Saturday March 15th, Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter’s Office will conduct its 4th annual Free Family Fitness and Fun Day. The event will take place from 12:00 – 4:00 at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 285 Old Westport Road, in the Tripp Athletic Center. The media is invited and encouraged to attend.

Among its free fitness activities are a full Zumba class station, an obstacle course and ‘Boot Camp’ with the UMass Fitness Team, and a yoga stretch and stress relief session. In addition, the event will offer free health screenings by South Coast Mobile Health Services, free spine and subluxation screenings by Chiropractic USA, nutrition and cooking demonstrations, and a resource section featuring over twenty local establishments and health and wellness organizations.

This year’s special guest speaker is former NHL defenseman and UMD ice hockey coach Brian Pothier. Pothier will speak following opening remarks by event coordinator and former Red Sox pitcher, Brian Rose who serves in the Community Affairs Division of the District Attorney’s Office. Miss New Bedford Jillian Zucco will also be present to sing the National Anthem to kick off the event. The event will offer free food, gifts, and raffle items and all attendees will receive a free sports bag with a fitness and nutrition packet.

“I have said many times that we are committed at the district attorney’s office to the idea that regular exercise and physical fitness are an ideal everyone can strive for and a barrier to crime,” said Sutter. “This year, and probably for the next few years, our focus for this event is going to be young people who are not exercising enough. This is a national problem. Childhood obesity in the United States is up over 33 percent, and we have societal leaders like Michelle Obama and the National Football league regularly emphasizing the importance of regular exercise for our young people.”

Rose will be joined by additional staff members from the District Attorney’s office. The event is an annual program of District Attorney Sutter’s unique ‘Volunteer Initiative’ which aims to unite the District Attorney’s Office with positive community activities. Since its inception in 2007, staff members have contributed over 17,900 hours of service to the community. Ensuring that youth and families stay connected and stay healthy fall within Sutter’s efforts to keep communities safe and deter youth from becoming involved in crime.

“What we are welcoming with open arms this Saturday are those who have not been exercising regularly and want to start,” Sutter said. “I myself was one of those people. Four years ago, I started exercising regularly again and I believe I am a much more effective person today as a result of it.”
