Man Sentenced to Prison for Assault on Correctional Officer and Threats to Kill

Press Release

March 7, 2017

A 26-year-old Bellingham man who assaulted and threatened to kill a Bristol County House of Corrections correctional officer last September will serve the next two-and-a-half to four years in state prison, District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced.

Jared Roy pleaded guilty in Fall River Superior Court last Friday to a two-count indictment charging him with assault and battery of a correctional officer and threats.

On September 20, 2016, a unit within the jail in Dartmouth was undergoing a lockdown procedure.  One of the two correctional officers  working in the unit asked the defendant to lock down. The defendant refused, saying “we are not going in until we get what we want.”  The defendant then charged at the victim and punched him in the face, which caused the victim to fall to the ground.  The defendant then jumped on top of the victim and continued to assault him.  Shortly thereafter, the victim was subdued by other correctional officers.

The victim suffered a black eye and a concussion that kept him out of work for two weeks.

On the next day, the defendant was interviewed about the incident by another correctional officer. During that interview, the defendant threatened, “would you be this calm when it’s you and me, and I have a piece of steel in my hands…that’s when I will fucking kill you.”

The defendant was serving a one year jail sentence for an assault and battery case at the time of this incident.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Patrick Driscoll, and the sentence was imposed by Superior Court Judge Raffi Yessayan.

““This defendant has a history of violence towards correctional officers. In this case, he violently assaulted a correctional officer who was just trying to do his job,” District Attorney Quinn said. “The job of corrections officer is not an easy one. This defendant’s response to authority is to violently assault the victim in this case and threaten his life. This defendant needed to be punished for this anti-social behavior.”
