New Bedford Fatal Hit & Run Update

The victim of Saturday morning’s fatal hit and run crash in New Bedford has been positively identified as Cresencio Gonzales Mureno, 26, of New Bedford.

State and New Bedford Police continue to seek the public’s assistance in locating a vehicle involved in the crash. Investigators have narrowed down the type of vehicle involved in the incident to a Volvo XC90 or a very similar type SUV.  The vehicle is blue in color and is expected to have some front end damage and/or a leak from the undercarriage.

Saturday morning at approximately 2:10 AM, the blue SUV, with multiple occupants inside, struck a pedestrian in the roadway of Route 18 North in New Bedford near the Route 195 on-ramps.  The vehicle left the scene of the crash, taking the on-ramp and entering Route 195 west.  The pedestrian, now identified as Mr. Mureno,  suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford before being transferred to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, where he died from his wounds around 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police are requesting the help of the public in identifying the vehicle and its driver.
