Taunton Man Charged With Previously Unsolved November 2013 Murder

District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III today announced that a 23-year-old Taunton man has been charged with the previously unsolved November, 2013 murder 24-year-old Edwin Rivera Jr. in Taunton.

A formal complaint charging Flavio Daveiga, formerly of 15 Newcombe Place, with murder, was filed in Taunton District Court Wednesday afternoon.

Mr. Daveiga will likely be arraigned on the murder charge Friday morning in Taunton District Court.

Police received a call on November 25, 2013 around 11:40 p.m. regarding a man being struck by a CSX transportation train in the area behind 37 Cushman Street. The victim, later identified as Edwin Rivera Jr., 24, of Taunton, was transported the next morning to Boston for an Autopsy at the State Medical Examiner’s Office.

The autopsy concluded that Mr. Rivera died as a result of gunshot wounds.

State and local police arrested Flavio Daveiga on November 27, 2013 and charged him with accessory to murder before the fact and the obstruction of justice portion of the witness intimidation statute.

Mr. Daveiga was ordered held on $2 million cash bail during his November, 2013 arraignment and remains in custody. He also had his bail revoked on four open cases, meaning even if he does post the $2 million cash bail, he would still be held without bail for up to 60 days. The defendant is due back in court for appointment of counsel on December 3rd.

As a result of further investigation by State Police, Taunton Police and homicide unit prosecutors, those charges have now officially been upgraded to murder.

The investigation is being coordinated by Deputy District District Attorney William McCauley and Assistant District Attorney Stephen Nadeau, who will be handling this tomorrow’s arraignment.
